DIDI Showcases Next-Gen Fashion Design in Second Act

Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) proudly celebrates its students' remarkable achievements in the ACTUI Second Act Competition, a platform that recognizes emerging talent in the world of fashion and textile innovation. This prestigious event brought together young designers from DIDI, challenged them to rethink functional fashion with a focus on innovation, sustainability, and cultural storytelling. It was about giving a new life to waste from the leftover fabric from the ACTUI furniture factory in Spain.

Shaping the Future of Fashion Design

At DIDI, design is more than aesthetics—it’s about problem-solving, user experience, and sustainability. The Second Act competition provided an opportunity for our students to push the boundaries of conventional fashion design, blending traditional craftsmanship with modern innovation.

“Design is a powerful tool for storytelling. Through fashion, we can bring culture, sustainability, and innovation together in a way that enhances both form and function.” — Andra Clitan, Fashion Designer & DIDI Faculty Member.

Bridging Fashion and Function

The synergy between fashion and functionality was a key theme in this year’s competition, with students experimenting with textiles, materials, and modular concepts. Judges advocated for innovation in design, and creativity in fashion.

“Design should be for everyone. Functional yet aesthetic pieces can transform wardrobes while catering to diverse needs.” — Fatima Lodhi, Winner of the Second Act Competition

Meanwhile, Nour Abdelaty, DIDI fashion Studio Instructor, emphasized the significance of cross-disciplinary collaboration in design:

“Fashion and furniture share a deep connection—both require an understanding of structure, movement, and materiality. Seeing this intersection come to life in the competition was inspiring.” — Nour Abdelaty

The Winning Designs

The competition’s winning designs demonstrated a fusion of sustainability, smart technology, and cultural influences. Whether through upcycled materials, ergonomic innovations, or interactive elements, the projects showcased how young designers are shaping the future of fashion.

As a hub for creativity and innovation, DIDI continues to empower students to push the boundaries of design thinking, ensuring that the next generation of fashion designers is equipped to transform the industry.
